M Muralitharan Biography


Muttiah Muralitharan is an extra ordinary cricket player, because he holds the world record for the highest wicket taker in ODI and test cricket. In the previous week, he breaks Wasim Akram’s record of 502 wickets in ODI by taking India’s Gautham Gambhir’s wicket in the one day cricket against India. He also breaks the Shane Warne’s world record of 768 wickets in test cricket. It is no doubt that he is the most successful off spin bowler of modern age. He was born in the village of Nattarampotha in Kundasale as the son of Sinnasamy Muttiah and Lakshmi. He gained his school education from St.Anthony’s College, Kandy. He started his cricket career as a medium pace bowler, but he turned his bowling into off spin with the advice of his coach Sunil Fernando. He gained a name ‘Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1991′ by taking 100 wickets in cricket of his school. After the school education, he joined Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club and was selected for the Sri Lanka tour of England. He did not gained any wickets in 5 games of that tour. But he gained impression in Allan Border’s Australian team practice game and made his debut test against Australia at the age of 20 and took two wickets in successive balls. He also played a major part in all victories of Sri Lanka against England and New Zealand in 1992-93. In 1993, he gained his first 5 wickets haul in Test against South Africa. He always showed his qualities as a match-winner on any surface. He give Sri Lanka a historic 2-1 victory against New Zealand in 1995 by taking 19 wickets in that series. In 1998, Muralitharan took his first ten-wicket haul against Zimbabwe. All batsman of various countries are feared to face his powerful off spin bowling. His bowling actions are always in suspicion. His bowling action named ‘doosara’ brings argument among umpires. But in 1996, he was cleared by the ICC by saying that his action created the ‘optical illusion of throwing’. But the argument continues against him and he become the unfair victim of many umpires. But he continued his achievements. In 2004, he break Courtney Walsh’s 519-wicket world record and become the highest wicket-taker in Test. Besides in test cricket, Muralitharan also showed his talent in ODI cricket. He made his one day debut in 1993 against India. In 2000, he gained his best bowling figure 7/30 against India. Now this spin wizard became world’s number one One-day wicket taker with 503 wickets in 328 ODIs with an average of 22.74 and with best figure 7/30. He overcome the Pakistani bowler Wasim Akram’s record of 502 wickets in ODIs. His batting was very poor. But sometimes, he troubled the bowlers due to his unorthodox and adventurous batting ways. He holds the record for the highest 10th wicket partnership in tests for Sri Lanka together with Chaminda Vaas by taking 79 runs against Australia. He is married to Madhimalar Ramamurthy and had a son.
