Malinga Bandara is a right-arm leg-spin bowler with great caliber. Even though he was marked as a leg-spinner of immense potential, he has under-performed on numerous occassions. A great performance at the U-19 level and on Sri Lanka A tours helped him earning a Test debut in 1998-99. He failed to keep his place into the side after a disappointing display.
His consistent persistence at the domestic level earned him a recall to the national side in 2006. However, Bandara has provided Muralidaran with valuable support in the shorter form of the game. He is a useful lower order batsman and it this all-round adaptability that earned him a World Cup place. But, he has failed to nail a permanent place in the Lankan side.
